“You’re right!” Sally says. “I see shoes poking out from beneath my bedroom curtains. I’m going to simply pull away the curtain and see if there actually is a man in those shoes who wants a relationship with me!” She turns to head back to her bedroom.

“Wait!” all three hat-men scream in unison. “You can’t simply test Jake by pulling away the curtain!” the orange-hat man admonishes. “You must get on your knees and see if you feel his presence and love for you. Plus, he has given me this love letter for you to read about who he is and what he has done for you.”

Sally takes the love letter into her hands. “I don’t quite understand. He is currently behind my curtains, yet he gave you this love letter to give me to communicate with me?”

“Actually,” the green-hat man says as he extends his hand, “This is Jim’s actual love letter. Jim loves you so much! Just don’t dishonor him by doubting he is behind your curtains! Simply believe. The shoes you have seen are evidence enough for you to believe.”

Divine hiddenness has been long debated. Weigh in on the following analogy:

Sally, a lonely girl without a boyfriend, answers her door. Outside stand three men, each wearing a different colored hat. “Can I help you?” Sally asks.

“Yes!” they all exclaim. The green-hat man, who has maneuvered himself closest to the door, says, “My friend, Jim, loves you very deeply and wants a relationship with you.”

“Ok,” Sally responds. “And where is Jim?”

The green-hat man broadly grins and says, “He is with you this very moment! Don’t you sense his presence and love?”

The blue-hat man interjects, “Yes, his name is Jack, and he is always with you. He just needs you to believe in him.”

“Wait,” Sally says. “What do you mean he is always with me?”

The orange-hat man steps forward. “His name is actually Jake, and he is standing behind your bedroom curtains this very moment, hoping you believe in him. If you do believe, he will marry you, and life will be wonderful!”

Sally looks askance at the men in hats. “You are suggesting a man who loves me is hiding in my bedroom, demanding I believe he exists before he will start a relationship with me. Is that normal?”

The blue-hat man nudges past the orange-hat man. “Jake’s ways are not our ways. You are allowing your human reasoning to cause you to doubt him. If you check your bedroom, you’ll find evidence of him.”

“Stay right here,” Sally says.

Sally walks into her bedroom. She looks toward her long bedroom curtains. Sure enough! There are shoes poking out from beneath the curtains! Her heart skips a beat. She excitedly runs back to the front door.

Sally ponders this for a moment. “Actually, it would be a whole lot easier if he would simply step out from behind the curtains.”

The three hat-men gasp. “No, you must have faith!” the blue-hat man exclaims. “Jack needs you to believe on little evidence. You are not fit for him if you require clear evidence before you believe. And this love letter here says so.”

Sally takes the third love letter and examines the three together. “How did you come by these love letters?” she asks.

The green-hat man quickly responds. “Jim handed me your love letter out your window to give to you. Read it. Does it not sound like a man who loves you?”

“What the love letter says is not my primary concern”, says Sally. “I’m puzzled by the convoluted way this alleged man, whatever his name, has decided to communicate with me. Why would he not simply step out from behind the curtains?”

“Don’t be arrogant!” the blue-hat man says. “Jack is wiser than you are and becomes quite angry when you question his ways. Your evil rebellion is making you blind to his existence. You have shoes poking out from beneath your bedroom curtains! What more do you need?”

Sally stares hard at him. “An actual man speaking directly to me would be nice. Is that too much to ask?”

“Yes, it is,” explains the orange-hat man. “Do you not see the beauty of fully believing in Jake based on little evidence? He will reward you with a new house and stuff if you do.”

“That is only a claim,” Sally responds. “Can I at least pull aside my curtains to see whether there is a man?”

The blue-hat man scowls. “If you cannot believe he is real based on his love letter I’ve given you, you will not believe if he steps out from behind the curtain!”

Sally turns to face him. “That claim seems a bit presumptuous. Why would I reject the existence of a real man who actually introduced himself?”

“You have a wicked heart,” says the blue-hat man. “You, in your rebellion, are looking for ways to reject Jake. You want to live your own life free of his will for your life. Shoes poking out from beneath your curtains are more than enough evidence for you to believe.”

“This all seems so convoluted to me. There is a man currently standing behind the curtains in my bedroom who has given you hat-men love letters to introduce himself, and I cannot test to see whether the shoes poking out from beneath the curtains actually contain this potential boyfriend. Is that right?”

“That’s right!” the hat-men exclaim while each points to their respective ‘authentic’ love letters in Sally’s hand.

Sally suddenly scowls and slams the door shut. Bewildered, the hat-men shake their heads, all wondering why Sally would not believe Jim…er…Jake…or was it Jack is behind her bedroom curtains with so much love, just needing her to believe on faith he exists as the love letters they handed her assert.

Sally heads back to her bedroom, pulls back the curtains, and discovers…

[Choose your own ending based on your own disposition toward Sally, who requires clear evidence.]
